Life at her home rolled low and slow.[break][break]

Lazy days passed with little transition, and Bailey Cooper could watch time slip without warning. Faster and faster, sand dripped between her fingers. There were few things that kept her busy when she isolated herself to this place—when work as an officer was done, and when her duties as an Elite Four member were addressed, she came her for respite.[break][break]

And she wondered if it was akin to letting her body sink into the mud; mind rutted in old memories and old traumas that rang like wounds late into the night. She would replay them, like records, over and over with an obsessive persistence. [break][break]

Some days, she could fight this pointless cycle—other days, she happily embraced it.[break][break]

There was no fear as she closed her eyes to relive what she had already survived—only frustration. Thoughts burned and churned, leaving her inflamed like that day in the ruins of Mossdeep. Could it have played out differently? [break][break]

Every time, the answer would slip away, and she'd grasp at the grains that felt like grit to burrow into the skin.[break][break]

It was bullshit. Total bullshit.[break][break]

Already brewing in these negative thoughts, she slapped the shit out of her coffee machine when its pour sputtered. It was too early to be awake, and she can feel Piggie Smalls clutch to her leg in protest as she stood in her stained sweatpants and wrinkled t-shirt.[break][break]

“Get up, lazy bones.” She would grumble under her breath to the sleepy pig. “We got company coming any second now...”[break][break]

But she refused to rush, perfectly happy to roam her home in her pajamas—bare feet tracking across the cold hardwood as she waited for her guest to arrive.

After weeks of mundane busy work, weeks of doing chores and weeks of bugging the desk jockeys at HQ, June was finally getting her chance. June hadn’t come all the way to Hoenn, to this godforsaken region; enlist in its league to end up cleaning trash and walking old ladies across the street.

No she was here to get into the action, to prove her mettle and get what was hers. That’s why she was excited, perhaps a bit too much, when she was told that she’d be working with one of the acclaimed Elite Four and officer, Bailey Cooper.

June eagerly approached the beachside estate, her Scorbunny following along at her side, but she stopped for a moment and checked the address she was given for about the fifth time this day.

This was where the address led but June had her doubts, a result from her assumptions and hesitation to ignore them and accept the reality of the situation. The question that popped into her mind as to whether or not Bailey actually lived here, it struck June as odd.

She put her suspicion aside and continued, in too deep now to turn around and double-check if she had the right place.

”Man, Jet, this is going to be so awesome! Lucky break for us, huh? All that work’s finally paying off!” June’s Scorbunny nodded excitedly in agreement. Once they reached the door June gave herself a quick look over to make sure her attire was proper, they had to make a good first impression.

”Ready?” She’d ask her little Scorbunny who gave her the thumbs as she then proceeded to knock on the door.

As time passed, she managed to muster the energy to make herself presentable.[break][break]

Somewhat.[break][break]

Hair combed back, Bailey had switched from sweatpants to jeans. Her ratty t-shirt was swapped for a tank-top. With the windows open, the summer breeze could freely flow into the house, and the sunlight still burned strong if she lingered in its presence.[break][break]

Hot coffee might have been a mistake, but she drank it regardless.[break][break]

A knock at the door made her rise from her seat, allowing Piggie Smalls the chance to steal it. Little opportunist looked pleased with himself as he siphoned warmth like it was a rare commodity.[break][break]

She opened the door, dead in the eyes from exhaustion, but still trying to raise a smile. “Hey, June, right? Come on in.”[break][break]

How the hell did Dahlia do so many house visits?[break][break]

“Uh, hope you don't mind the clutter,” because unorganized binders were stacked by the dining table, where their papers pointed out at the edges with their stained yellow pages. “You want some coffee? I got breakfast—” her eyes glanced to the clock, realizing it was closer to noon.[break][break]

“Lunch. I got lunch going, if you're hungry.”[break][break]

Then came the sound of a loud ding as her toaster released the two poptarts that had been loaded into it.

Her enthusiasm and excitement almost vanished when she saw the Elite Four member, looking dead as if sleep and relaxation of was a foreign concept.

The young cadet just stared for a moment, speechless and only snapped out of it when her Scorbunny gave her a nudge with his elbow.

”O-oh right! Yeah I’m June Fair! It’s nice to meet you!” She’d reply, walking into Cooper’s home. June wasn’t sure what she was expecting to find inside but she hadn’t expect it to be so…plain?

What was she expecting? Some sort of extravagant interior design that’d probably cost thousands? Maybe she had watched too many of those celebrity house shows.

”Oh it’s no problem.” June wasn’t really sure how to reply to that but honestly, she wouldn’t mind something as silly as some cluttered papers. This wasn’t what she had in mind that they’d be doing.

June had imagined that they’d be going on sort of job or maybe doing some sort of training. But instead, they were talking about coffee and lunch? And from the sound of the toaster, it sounded like lunch was a total wash.

”Ah no thanks, had a pretty big meal before I came.”

Have a seat anywhere,” and she'd wave a hand to the empty stools situated by the quaint kitchen island—it looked like it had been just wiped down, and Bailey attributed that to Piggie Smalls and his psychic tendencies. He liked things to be clean. That was a hard feat to accomplish in her home.[break][break]

Bailey crossed the distance to the toaster, fishing out one of the confections with a pinch of the fingers, followed by a hiss as she'd drop it to the counter—still too hot to eat, and heat lingered on her fingers like a slap for her impatience.[break][break]

On the counter, Chub's beauty contest ribbon sat in its glass frame. Photos of the event pressed to the fridge, like she was a doting mother. “Suit yourself. I can always make more if you change your mind.”[break][break]

She sipped her black coffee, trying to think of what to say as she filled the silence with the smallest of slurps.[break][break]

Better to be frank. “Some stiffs asked me to read your file, but I haven't had the chance,” she waved a hand in the air, as if gesturing to the imaginary bullshit that could interfere with that simple task. “Figured I wouldn't need to—got asked to invite you over to the house cuz they wanted the two of us to start working together.”[break][break]

“It's probably some new program to help mentor cadets. Something I didn't get to experience a year-or-so ago. So, go ahead and give me some uh... the fuck do they call it? An elevator pitch? Tell me what you're good at it, what you want to be better at, and I'll take your word for it.”[break][break]

Impatience would win as she would bit into her strawberry poptart, followed by a cringe as it almost burned her mouth.[break][break]

Piggie Smalls could only give a shake of the head.

June took a seat in one of the empty stools, Jet following quickly after and hopped onto the woman’s lap and took a seat himself. As June’s eyes began to wander about the room, stopping once she spotted the photos of the beauty contest, she subconsciously grabbed at the bunny’s cheek.

She pinched them lightly much to the annoyance the Scorbunny who swatted at her hands which only made her move from the cheeks to his ears. June’s mind would have been preoccupied thinking about what she had heard about that event if Bailey had begun speaking about the cadet’s file.

Her eyes widened a bit, she wanted June to give her a what? She wasn’t prepared for this and almost got irritated at the idea of it.

”I’m quick on my feet, a fast learner, good with the books and not too shabby at battling either. And a real hard worker.” As she spoke of her good qualities Jet had stood up and throw his little fists in the air in front of him and made a fierce face.

His way of backing up her claims of being a good fighter came off more cute than intimidating but he was trying his best.

Talking about what she was good at was the easy part but what she wanted to get better at was a bit more difficult to put into words.

Or rather if she was being more honest she didn’t like talking about areas she wasn’t all that great at, especially not ones where she had been yelled at for in the past and prevented her from getting the position she had coveted.

”Don’t have much experience out in the field actually doing real officer work, that’s where I’d like to get better at the most.” She was so tired of doing boring bullshit grunt work and wanted to finally do something exciting.

There was nothing critical in her stare.[break][break]

Bailey munched through the poptart after giving it a moment to cool, looking almost tranquil as she watched the reactions unfolding between June and her Galarian pokemon.[break][break]

Firebun? Scorebun? She couldn't remember the name.[break][break]

Piggie Smalls returned to her side, and when he pulled at her pant leg, she handed him the second poptart—two in a pouch was always too much for her. “Hey, remember to blow on it,” was her only warning as she passed off the whole confection.[break][break]

When her eyes returned back to June, it was in time to catch her own personal reflection. Each statement was taken at its face-value. Bailey would take those words in their entirety, and trust them to be true.[break][break]

If not, then that would just be something else to work on.[break][break]

“Well, you'll get more than plenty of field experience with me around. I never get a dull day,” and she would take a short sip of her blackened brew, taking it without milk or sugar.[break][break]

She liked it bitter.[break][break]

“Especially not with this little shit,” and unable to resist, she'd pull Piggie Smalls up from the ground with a loop of one arm. The psychic pokemon would immediately squirm, then squeal, as she blew a raspberry right on his cheek—his mouth paused mid-chew through the sugary “breakfast” treat.

She was nervous and the kind of nervous that made you want to crawl under a rock and never come back out again. And it was pretty hard to tell by the look on Bailey’s face how she was feeling about what June was saying.

But that could really just be because June’s nerves were making her overthink things, she was not used to feeling like this and she hated it. And what she probably hated more was feeling like an idiot which she did once Bailey spoke.

She really wasn’t joking when she said she was going to take June’s words at face value.

But a wave of relief went over her once she realized that she was in the clear and that previous nervousness turned into excitement. ”And that’s exactly what I need!” She shot up out of his seat, her Scorbunny flailing as its comfy seat suddenly moved. The bunny managed to stick the landing, almost falling over though.

”Oh this’ll be awesome! What will we do first?! Takedown some drug ring? Go deep undercover in some criminal syndicate? Break up illegal Pokémon trafficking rings?! Whatever it is I am down! Oh and I won’t let you down, I promise!” As June went on her little squealing session, Jet hopped up onto the table and watched his trainer for a moment.

Her enthusiasm was contagious as he then hopped in place and started to throw punches again, an eager look on his face to get out there and fight.

One long swig cleaned the coffe mug, and she set it atop her counter unwashed as she made her way to the front door.[break][break]

“You got a ride? If not, I got a spare helmet. Let's patrol,” and there was nothing left to be said as Piggie Smalls bounced after her.
